Quinta das Ondas
Quinta das Ondas was designed to reflect
the beauty and character of the Madeiran countryside. Designed
to make the most of the local climate and stunning scenery, the
whole property creates a pleasing meeting point between modern spacious
convenience, calming curved lines and rustic charm.
Cleverly
following the five terraces of the original agricultural land, the
property starts at the top with a driveway and car port leading to
the guest cottage. The open-plan living and kitchen room has
stunning views over the sea, with sliding patio doors onto the covered
verandah. The double bedroom also has patio doors to the verandah
with beautiful sea views, and mountain views to through the side window.
There are fitted oak wardrobes. The bathroom, tiled in cream
and brown bamboo-style ceramics has a full sized bath with shower,
suspended toilet and bidet and sink. A wonderful place to offer
your guests, or to let separately as an added income.
Down one
curved flight of garden steps we find the entrance to the main house.
Leading into the open plan living and dining area, following around
the beautiful curved internal walls into the semi-open-plan kitchen.
The whole floor is tiled with rustic terracotta natural stone tiles
and way above the living and dining room we see the open mahogany
and oak roof timbers. An unusual African ceramic woodburning
stove offers warmth on the rare occasions the evenings feel cooler
in the winter. A mezzanine floor with oak floorboards and curved
railings overlooks the sitting area. All rooms are fitted with
ample power, TV and telephone points throughout.
The kitchen
is fully fitted with beautiful custom-built oak cupboards and high
quality Smeg appliances. Designed for ease of use there is no bending
into awkward spaces - the units provide deep, strong drawers and tall
larder-style cupboards.
In Madeira we love to spend time outside
and the house is designed to accommodate this. The large arched
patio doors from the living and dining room lead out onto a vast verandah approximately
10m x 5m with a mahogany and oak roofed area over the first 2.7m
with built-in BBQ. From the side patio doors we can walk out
onto the garden where a 200 year old olive tree provides shade for
the hotter times of the day, edged with shrubs and stone-faced walls.
The
open, curved stairwell, custom built to fit the semi-circular turrett
is a work of art in itself. We see Madeiran carpentry at its
best where the solid oak treads sit beautifully on the cylindrical
steel central column. Blue glass windows stretch the height
of the three-storey stairwell - from the mezzanine, to the living
area and then on down to the bedrooms.
Downstairs the bedrooms
areas are laid with solid oak flooring. From the master, en-suite
bedroom we look straight out to sea through the arched patio doors
which lead out onto the covered verandah and then directly into
the garden and swimming pool area. Designed to ensure that the
best views are seen from the bed - the sea in front and the mountain
through the side window. The dressing area has beautiful oak
fitted wardrobes. The luxury en-suite bathroom as a double-sink
vanity unit, suspended toilet and bidet, multi-functional shower and
large corner jaccuzzi bath. With mirrored privacy glass in the
windows, one can admire the beautiful mountainside during the daylight
hours.
The guest bedroom, with oak fitted wardrobes, also has
arched patio doors onto the lower covered verandah and garden.
The guest bathroom next door has a multi-functional shower, suspended
toilet and washbasin.
The large, solar-heated swimming pool is
perfect for all year use. Dive into the specially designed
deeper area of the pool and float on the waters watching the blue
skies above and mountains in the background.
